ISLAMABAD, Feb 2, 2010: United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is making assessment of the damages caused to monuments as a result of terrorist attacks in NWFP to preserve cultural heritage of Pakistan.
UNESCO officials claimed that they have started work on gathering statistics of historical places in Peshawar, Mansehra and Chitral. They have found 255 monuments damaged in Peshawar, 230 in Mansehra and 300 in Chitral, VOA reported.
According to the organization, 15 important historical buildings including tomb of eminent Pushto poet Rehman Baba were damaged in Peshawar by the terrorist attacks.
The world body also intended to collect information regarding demolished buildings in Swat and Bannu as well.
According to experts, hundred years' old cultural heritage of Swat, Meena Bazar and Qissa Khawani Bazar of Peshawar were destroyed in extremists' attacks.
It may be added that the extremists demolished historical Laddha Fort in South Waziristan, which was constructed by the British government before the creation of Pakistan whereas statues of Buddha in Swat were greatly affected by the extremists.--APP
